Handloom sarees, understood before you choose.

Handloom cloth is formed on a loom whose weaving movements are controlled by a person rather than an automatic power loom. Lengthwise warp threads create the foundation; the weft crosses them one pass at a time until the cloth grows.

The word handloom describes how a textile is woven, not one single fibre, region or visual style. A handloom saree may be cotton, silk, linen or a blend, and its feel depends on the yarn, weave density, finishing and the individual piece.

How it is made

From first decision to finished cloth.

  1. 01

    The warp is prepared

    Long parallel yarns are measured, ordered and placed under even tension. Their spacing establishes the structure of the cloth.

  2. 02

    The shed opens

    Selected warp threads rise and fall to create a path through which the weft can travel.

  3. 03

    The weft crosses

    A shuttle or small bobbin carries one pass of weft across the warp. The reed presses that pass into place.

  4. 04

    The cloth is finished

    The woven length is checked at the edges and surface, then washed, pressed or otherwise finished according to the fibre and weave.

Choosing it

Choose the individual cloth, not the handloom label alone. Cotton and linen can feel crisp or relaxed; silk can feel fluid or substantial. Ask about fibre, weight and blouse inclusion when the product record does not state them.

Care

Care follows the fibre, dyes and finish. Until the exact instructions for a piece are confirmed, keep it dry, fold it loosely away from direct sun and ask Vishita before the first wash, press or dry clean.
